The Future of Virtual Health and Care

Driving access and equity through inclusive policies

Novartis Foundation The Novartis Foundation has been co-chairing, along with the World Health Organization, the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development Working Group on Virtual Health and Care. The working group just published its report ‘The Future of Health and Care’, which delivers a roadmap that describes which policies have enabled a rapid uptake of virtual health and care during the pandemic, to serve as recommendations to help governments and other stakeholders ensure that virtual health and care drives access and equity, rather than entrenching or exacerbating existing divides. Fostering cardiovascular health at work – case study from Senegal

BioMed Central Public Health "Of the 15 million annual premature deaths from non-communicable diseases (NCDs), 85% occur in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Affecting individuals in the prime of their lives, NCDs impose severe economic damage to economies and businesses, owing to the high mortality and morbidity within the workforce. The Novartis Foundation urban health initiative, Better Hearts Better Cities, was designed to improve cardiovascular health in Dakar, Senegal through a combination of interventions including a workplace health program. In this study, we describe the labor policy environment in Senegal and the outcomes of a Novartis Foundation-supported multisector workplace health coalition bringing together volunteering private companies."

The role of tech to ensure cardiovascular health in the COVID-19 era

Novartis Foundation "In addition to the direct health risks of the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus’ indirect effects have also severely disrupted access to basic health services that prevent, diagnose, and treat patients with noncommunicable diseases. Every year, NCDs kill 41 million people — up to 71% of all deaths globally. The majority of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, where health systems are often limited in terms of capacity and resources. (...) Devex hosted a virtual event in partnership with the Novartis Foundation to explore how the global health community can build on this momentum of increased use and trust in virtual health and care services, to leverage technology for improving cardiovascular population health, especially in LMICs."

Ein ähnlicher Trend lässt sich jetzt auch für die Implementierung digitaler Technologien in die Gesundheitssysteme dieser Länder feststellen, wie ein aktueller Bericht unter Leitung der Novartis Foundation und Microsoft aufzeigt.

Novartis Foundation announces implementation partners for Better Hearts Better Cities urban health initiative in São Paulo, Brazil

Novartis Foundation Less than three months after the selection of São Paulo, Brazil as the third city of the urban health initiative Better Hearts Better Cities, the Novartis Foundation announced the creation of a network of global and local implementation partners. They will co-design interventions to address São Paulo’s urban priorities to improve local cardiovascular health, including health education, lifestyle community programs, care coordination and standardization according to up-to-date clinical guidelines, and incorporating digital health tools into screening and care for high blood pressure.

Novartis Foundation In advance of World Leprosy Day 2018, the Novartis Foundation is excited to join the new Global Partnership for Zero Leprosy. The partnership brings together organizations including the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP), the International Association for Integration, Dignity and Economic Advancement (IDEA), as well as national leprosy programs, with support from the World Health Organization. Novartis Foundation Novartis Foundation and Ghana Health Service are announcing the successful integration and scale-up of telemedicine services across Ghana. The telemedicine service started as a pilot model in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region in 2011, covering 30 communities of around 35,000 people. The Novartis Foundation worked with local and international partners to make the pilot a success.

Mobile is the fastest adopted technology of all time: in 1991, mobile cellular penetration stood at less than 1%, compared to 99.7% in 2016 – and there will be an estimated 5.6 billion smartphones by 2020. Around 90% of that growth will come from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Fighting high blood pressure – the silent killer

World Heart Day 2016

Novartis Foundation Heart disease is the deadliest chronic disease in the world. Rapid urbanization in low- and middle-income countries is a contributing factor – migration from rural to urban areas is associated with increased blood pressure, the leading cause of heart disease. Healthcare services in these growing cities are struggling, and are swamped with ongoing challenges like infectious diseases. They have limited time or resources to tackle chronic diseases like high blood pressure, which are often without symptoms early on, yet can cause long-term damage.
