MMS Nachrichten vom 09.02.2011

aidsfocus.ch Conference 2011: Linking HIV and reproductive and sexual health and rights

Bern, 7th April 2011

UNAIDS, the International AIDS Society, the Global Fund and other international bodies are aware of the need of better integration of HIV/AIDS, reproductive and sexual health and rights and other key health priorities. At the local level, many NGOs allready work in an integrated way. However, many challenges emerge: If HIV prevention and care are integrated into reproductive health services and family planning clinics, how will groups most at risk such as young girls and boys, MSM, sexworkers etc. be reached? How can the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and young girls living with and affected by HIV/AIDS be addressed?

WHO Gears Up For Reform Driven By Financial Shortfall

WHO is underfunded according to the Director General

"The Executive Board session of the World Health Organization ended early on Monday after a week of discussions that settled some issues but left some others for the next governing meeting of the organisation in May, with much to do until then. The WHO is facing a significant gap in its budget and a programme of reforms is brewing."

A long way back towards Health for All

Evolution of Global health policies since the Alma Ata Conference

"The financial challenge that WHO had to face, gave start to a significant change in the way global health priorities were defined. A crucial shift took place from predominant reliance on the regular budget – drawn from member states' assessed contributions defined on the basis of population size and gross national product – to greatly increased dependence on extrabudgetary funding, i.e “voluntary” contributions from “donor” countries and external contributors including the World Bank", wrote Eduardo Missoni in the MMS Bulletin two years ago.

Bericht der Physicians for Human Rights Israel
