Mistreatment of Women in Childbirth: Time for Action on This Important Dimension of Violence against Women

Mistreatment of Women in Childbirth: Time for Action on This Important Dimension of Violence against WomenPLOS Medicine How can the mistreamtent of women in childbirth be abolished? What are the main reasons for this problem which occures in all global regions? The scale of the problem is indicated by a systematic review conducted by Meghan Bohren and colleagues. In their analysis, they found parallels between the mistreatment of women in childbirth and violence against women more broadly, mainly stemming from structural gender inequality, i.e., women’s subordinate position in society as compared to men. The research provides a valuable fundament from which a typology of violence can be developed and used as a basis for developing measurement instruments and tools on order to avoid mistreatment in health care facilities.
