A Lancet Commission on obesity

The Lancet "The global pandemic of obesity continues unabated: 2·7 billion adults are projected to be overweight or have obesity by 2025. Obesity is driving global increases in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and several types of cancer, yet the implementation of recommended policies to reduce obesity has been slow and patchy.

Obesity is the result (called ‘emergence’) of many complex, manmade systems, including: food supply, transport, urban design, business, socio-cultural, marketing, communications, education, health, trade, legal, economic, and governance systems. All could potentially be re-oriented for better population and environmental outcomes.

To address these issues, The Lancet has established a Commission on Obesity to provide a multidisciplinary platform to contribute to accountability systems for action and to critically analyse the systemic drivers of, and solutions for, obesity." (Photo: Junk Food © flickr)
