A new era for community health in countries of low and middle income?
The Lancet "It is predicted that by 2030 there will be a worldwide shortage of over 14 million health workers. To help to address this pressing problem, the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos, Switzerland, saw the launch of a new 4-year US$100 million fund to support two non-governmental organisations, Last Mile Health and Living Goods, to train 50 000 community health workers (CHWs) in six countries.
(...) The project has two core components. The first is the use of mobile technologies for training, decision support, and data collection (known as mHealth). The partnership will continue to use Living Goods' SmartHealth App and a “new digital education solution” from Digital Campus, working in collaboration with Last Mile Health." Opinion: We need new ways to fund NCDs. Development assistance isn't enough.
devex.com "We have to be on the money if we want to bend the noncommunicable disease curve. It is not only political action that we need to see at the U.N. High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases this September in New York. Just as fundamental will be the financial ask.
We’ve long known that we’re at a NCD tipping point and that failure to act now will result in millions of cases of preventable illnesses and deaths across the globe, impacting most heavily on low- and middle-income countries. Globally, a lack of action on the prevention and control of NCDs will cause a loss of approximately $47 trillion from 2011-2030, or the equivalent of 5 percent of global GDP." Voice, representation, and community participation in the global response to NCDs
LinkedIn "Among those of us with an interest in global health, it is encouraging to see that noncommunicable diseases are finally getting a bit of traction. A third high level meeting will be held this year, WHO has struck a high level commission, and Twitter is buzzing with NCD talk.
There is broad agreement that civil society has a role in the global response. And we hear demands that communities be represented in governance of the global response. But how communities participate has not been clearly determined and there are questions about voice and representation being raised."
