Das Wortgebilde „Eurafrika“ entspringt ambivalenten Vorstellung, dass zwischen den beiden Kontinenten ganz spezielle Beziehungen bestehen. Eine Vortragsreihe des Europainstituts Basel nimmt diese Problematik auf. Neben historischen, ethnologischen und geografischen Zugängen beschäftigt sich der Vortrag von Prof. Marcel Tanner am 9. April mit der Frage nach „Europäischen Rezepten zu gesundheitlichen Erfolgen in Afrika“. Am 21. Mai wird Prof. Laurent Goetschel auf die Europäische Afrikahilfe zu sprechen kommen.

Seit dem 30. Dezember 2007 finden in Kenia heftige Unruhen statt. Diese haben im Anschluss an die Präsidentenwahl begonnen, deren Resultate von der Opposition bestritten werden. Nach einem Monat, am 28. Januar 2008, waren im Land 800 Tote, viele Verletzte und 250'000 Flüchtlinge zu verzeichnen. Im Distrikt von Trans Nzoia (Rift Tal) hat Handicap International – seit 1992 im Land tätig - die Zahl der Flüchtlinge auf 30'000 geschätzt. Trotz einer schwierigen und unstabiler Lage, wird die Organisation Nothilfe liefern und die bereits begonnenen Aktivitäten im Land fortsetzen.

Dreiländer-Lauf - «Unterwegs für Afrika»
Unterstützung für ein Aidswaisenprojekt in Tansania

Am Sonntag, 18. Mai 2008, Punkt 10.45 Uhr startet der Dreiländer-Lauf auf dem Basler Marktplatz. Mit am Start sind verschiedene prominente Persönlichkeiten aus der Region Basel. Der Lauf steht erneut unter dem Patronat von mission 21, dem evangelischen missionswerk basel. Läuferinnen und Läufer können Sport mit wohltätigem Engagement verbinden und sich ihre Kilometer für ein Aidswaisenprojekt in Tansania sponsern lassen.

On 31st January the International Network of People Who Use Drugs (INPUD) Asia and Pacific Region has issued the so called Goa Declaration. It asks to provide easy access to affordable antiretroviral medicines including second and third line treatments, TB and HCV treatment for all who need them. Drug users in Asia and the Pacific region are in a difficult situation facing imprisonment, compulsory detoxification and rehabilitation as governments strategies as “solution” to drug use.

Study of the methods to estimate immunisation coverage

SCIH has been awarded a contract to conduct a study of the methods to estimate immunisation coverage by the GAVI Alliance. The work to be done will contribute to clarify growing concerns in the international health community that information on coverage is not accurate enough and that national or global figures mask great inequities (e.g. rural population have less access to immunisation than urban ones.

This case study of a sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS project in Central Cuba (Provinces of Sancti Spiritus and Santa Clara), implemented between 2002 and 2006 by the Italian NGO GVC, aims to analyse the project using the theoretical model of empowerment of Keith Tones. It includes a description of the social and political environment, a review of the empowerment model, and an evaluation of the main actions of the project. Health promotion activities were especially focused on men having sex with men.
