Good nutrition can help to maintain and improve the health and the quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS. It can delay the progression from HIV to AIDS-related diseases. However, good nutrition cannot cure AIDS or prevent HIV infection or be a substitute for antiretroviral treatment. A healthy and balanced diet helps to maintain and improve the performance of the immune system and therefore helps a person to stay healthy. Good nutrition will complement and reinforce the effect of any medication taken.

Vector-borne diseases represent a rapidly increasing issue in Switzerland, both for the veterinary field and for human diseases. This areas has been already identified two years as a priority and the Swiss Society of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology supported the creation of the Swiss Vector Entomology Group. The meeting now offers the possibility to review the vector situation in Switzerland and Europe more generally, and to discuss possible next steps for strengthening our response capacity. A special feature will be the control of Aedes albopictus in Ticino.

Gesundheit, Ernährung und Entwicklung sind aufs Engste miteinander verknüpft. Unter den Kindern, die unter 5 Jahre alt sind, sind in den Entwicklungsländern ein Drittel von ihrer Entwicklung her zurück geblieben. Grund dafür ist eine chronische Mangelernährung. Diese Kinder drohen früher zu sterben, da sie mit einfachen Infektionskrankheiten weniger gut zu recht kommen. Sie haben aber auch schlechtere wirtschaftliche Perspektiven, da ihre Schulleistungen oft mangelhaft bleiben. Das 9. Symposium des Netzwerks Medicus Mundi Schweiz diskutiert Erfahrungen und erfolgreicher Strategien, um nährstoffreiche Ernährung als Teil einer umfassenden Gesundheitsversorgung sicherzustellen.

For the last 10 years, Bosnia & Herzegovina has actively implemented a major family medicine reform. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation strongly supported this effort with technical expertise provided by the Geneva University Hospitals. Under the guidance of Dr Nicolas Perone and a very dynamic Bosnian team, the successive phases of the FAMI project led to the founding of the Fondacija FAMI. In order to bring together regional and international expertise in the field of family medicine, Fondacija FAMI is organizing a conference in Banja Luka on primary health care strengthening as a foundation of health systems.

"Initié en 2008 pour uniformiser les pratiques de secours des 43 centres d’urgence de la Croix-Rouge au Liban, le projet de partenariat entre la Croix-Rouge libanaise, le Corps Suisse d’aide humanitaire et les HUG est entré dans sa troisième phase: ce sont à présent les formateurs libanais qui forment les volontaires des différents centres de la Croix-Rouge au Liban, sous la supervision d’instructeurs suisses et libanais."

"Globally, approximately one half of the population lives in rural areas, but less than 38% of the nurses and less than 25% of the physicians work there. While getting and keeping health workers in rural and remote areas is a challenge for all countries, the situation is worse in the 57 countries that have an absolute shortage of health workers. After a year-long consultative effort, this document proposes sixteen evidence-based recommendations on how to improve the recruitment and retention of health workers in underserved areas. It also offers a guide for policy makers to choose the most appropriate interventions, and to implement, monitor and evaluate their impact over time." (pdf)
