UNAIDS, the International AIDS Society, the Global Fund and other international bodies are aware of the need of better integration of HIV/AIDS, reproductive and sexual health and rights and other key health priorities. At the local level, many NGOs allready work in an integrated way. However, many challenges emerge: If HIV prevention and care are integrated into reproductive health services and family planning clinics, how will groups most at risk such as young girls and boys, MSM, sexworkers etc. be reached? How can the sexual and reproductive health needs of women and young girls living with and affected by HIV/AIDS be addressed?

Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services for Youth: Reality or Rhetoric?
Basel, 11th April 2011
Zimbabwe
Afrika-Komitee
|
"Between 2007 and 2010 Zimbabwe has known a dramatic decline in its HIV prevalence, and even more significant is the drop of new infections. The correlation between sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV is widely recognized. But how are youth involved in the SRHR programming by state and non state actors? What are the specific needs and challenges of youth in this respect and how are they being addressed? Our guest Beatrice Savadye is working with SAYWHAT (Students and Youth Working on Reproductive Health Action Team) in Zimbabwe. She will present a practical approach aiming at scaling up youth friendly SRHR programming in tertiary institutions."

The History of Health Care in Africa: Actors, Experiences, and Perspectives in the 20th Century
Basel, 12 -14 September 2011
HHSA
|
Health in Sub-Saharan Africa has always been experienced, debated and pursued in a specific historical context. At the same time the history of health and health care in a specific local setting cannot be separated from processes on a larger scale. Neither diseases nor ideas and practices about health, healing and care stopped at colonial or national borders. This conference looks beyond the borders of colonial empires and national states by bringing together researchers with different temporal and spatial perspectives on the history of health, health care and medical research in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The developing countries are faced with a crisis on two fronts: food prices skyrocketed in 2007/2008 and the food situation has deteriorated once more as a result of the economic crisis. We know from previous crises that food quality suffers above all and that this has long-term consequences for health. Last November the Network Medicus Mundi Switzerland organised a conference on this issue. The contributions have just been published. Contributors: Sybille Mooser und Jonas Vollmer, Ruth Huber, Pamela Chisanga, Ines Egli, Tobias Schüth, Jean-Pierre Papart, Maya Natarajan und Kadiatou Keita, Rosemarijn de Jong und Immita Cornaz.

Equity Must Accompany Economic Growth for Good Health
Despite economic growth undernutrition in India among children is high
India
PLoS Medicine
|
"(...) developing countries like India should not assume that economic growth will automatically translate into improved child nutrition and health. Measures for enhancing equity through inclusive growth, action on social determinants of health, and specific programs for improved early life nutrition will be needed if undernourished children are not to become the face of an economically advancing India," writes Srinath Reddy, Public Health Foundation of India, on PLoS Medicine.
