"Aiming to take a snapshot of the state of global health journalism, a report produced for the Kaiser Family Foundation found that shrinking newsroom budgets and the closing of many foreign bureaus are curtailing global health coverage within traditional news media outlets. Advocacy and nongovernmental organizations are increasingly bypassing news outlets and producing their own content, leading to questions about how global health news will evolve. In addition, with outside sources now funding some global health journalism coverage, the long-term sustainability of such funding is brought into question."

Malaria casts a shadow over the daily life of two billion people worldwide and leads to the premature death of at least one million children every year. This multimedia exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the complexity of malaria and its consequences. It highlights the approaches used by members of the Swiss Malaria Group to meet the challenges of this disease. The Swiss Malaria Group is chaired by the SDC and is composed of actors from the public sector, the private sector and civil society (among other the Network Medicus Mundi Switzerland and some of its members).

Die Häufigkeit chronischer Erkrankungen nimmt drastisch zu. Mehr als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung lebt heute in einem urbanen Umfeld und ist Veränderungen in Lebensstil und Umwelt ausgesetzt: Schadstoffe belasten zunehmend Luft und Wasser, Bewegungsarmut und Energiedichte der Nahrung steigen. Die chronischen Krankheiten nehmen somit zu, besonders in den sozial benachteiligten Schichten. Die WHO und die Weltbank warnen bereits vor den gesundheitlichen und wirtschaftlichen Folgen einer globalen Epidemie und haben Aktionspläne zu deren Prävention erarbeitet. Wo steht diese Entwicklung in der Schweiz und weltweit? Dieser Frage geht die diesjährige Swiss Public Health Conference nach.

Health in Sub-Saharan Africa has always been experienced, debated and pursued in a specific historical context. At the same time the history of health and health care in a specific local setting cannot be separated from processes on a larger scale. Neither diseases nor ideas and practices about health, healing and care stopped at colonial or national borders. This conference looks beyond the borders of colonial empires and national states by bringing together researchers with different temporal and spatial perspectives on the history of health, health care and medical research in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Der Vorstand würdigt im Rahmen seines Dankes an den Direktor seine Person und nimmt dabei auch klar Stellung zu Vorwürfen, die in den Medien kürzlich an die Adresse des Direktors erhoben wurden. Suite à la crise politique et aux conflits armés en Libye, le Corps suisse d’aide humanitaire (CSA) a organisé plusieurs missions sur place afin d’évaluer les besoins et organiser les mesures d’urgence appropriées. Dans ce cadre et selon la convention entre les HUG et le CSA, le Dr Olivier Hagon des HUG, s’est joint à deux de ces missions, l’une à Soloum, ville frontière avec l’Egypte, et l’autre à Benghazi.

Über HIV zu sprechen ist in der afrikanischen Gemeinschaft in der Schweiz noch immer ein Tabu, auch wenn sich in den letzten Jahren einiges bewegt hat. Am 4. Juni findet deshalb in Fribourg der 3. Konsultationstag zu HIV-Prävention und Solidarität mit HIV-positiven Menschen in der afrikanischen Gemeinschaft statt. Die Veranstaltung soll dazu beitragen, die Tür für weitere Präventionsbotschaften in der Migrationsbevölkerung zu öffnen und zu Solidarität und Integration von Betroffenen aufzurufen. Die Tagung wird von der Aids-Hilfe Schweiz gemeinsam mit der CEAS (Conférence des Eglises Africaines en Suisse), dem Verband für die afrikanischen Kirchen in der Schweiz, organisiert. Interessierte Fachpersonen aus dem Migrationsbereich und aus kirchlichen Kreisen sind willkommen. Das detaillierte Programm wird Mitte Mai bekannt gegeben.
