UN High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases: addressing four questions

The Lancet | "The UN High-Level Meeting (UN HLM) on NCDs in September, 2011, is an opportunity to stimulate a coordinated global response to NCDs that is commensurate with their health and economic burdens. To achieve the promise of the UN HLM, several questions must be addressed. In this report, we present the realities of the situation by answering four questions: is there really a global crisis of NCDs; how is NCD a development issue; are affordable and cost-effective interventions available; and do we really need high-level leadership and accountability?" NCD Alliance | "Governments around the world have agreed to hold a United Nations High Level Summit (UNS) on 19-20th September 2011 in New York which will be attended by UN member state Heads of State and Heads of Government. This Summit has the potential to change the world for those living with NCDs, but only if the meeting results in measurable commitments to take action. (…) The NCD Alliance, as the unique global voice representing those living with or affected by NCDs, has issued a Proposed Outcomes Document containing national and global targets for NCDs which we believe would represent a successful Summit." Chronische Krankheiten - eine globale Herausforderung

(D) PHS | Die Häufigkeit chronischer Erkrankungen nimmt drastisch zu. Mehr als die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung lebt heute in einem urbanen Umfeld und ist Veränderungen in Lebensstil und Umwelt ausgesetzt: Schadstoffe belasten zunehmend Luft und Wasser, Bewegungsarmut und Energiedichte der Nahrung steigen. Die chronischen Krankheiten nehmen somit zu, besonders in den sozial benachteiligten Schichten. Die WHO und die Weltbank warnen bereits vor den gesundheitlichen und wirtschaftlichen Folgen einer globalen Epidemie und haben Aktionspläne zu deren Prävention erarbeitet. Wo steht diese Entwicklung in der Schweiz und weltweit? Dieser Frage geht die diesjährige Swiss Public Health Conference nach.

Therapie für Opfer von Folter und Staatsgewalt

Bolivia interteam | Seit einem Jahr betreut die INTERTEAM-Fachperson Annelies Jordi zusammen mit der Partnerorganisation ITEI Menschen, die von staatlicher Gewalt betroffen sind. In Zentren und Gefängnissen in mehreren Städten des Landes werden die Betroffenen behandelt und begleitet. Annelies Jordi hat in der Schweiz während Jahren mit kriegstraumatisierten und gefolterten Flüchtlinge gearbeitet.Während eines Aufenthaltes in der Schweiz wird Annelies Jordi an verschiedenen Veranstaltungen Bilder zeigen von Bolivien, einem Land mit vielen Gegensätzen, und berichten von ihrer Arbeit im Gefängnis, von indigenen Schicksalen und von Menschen, die für die Demokratie kämpften. Die Vorträge finden in Zäziwil und Zürich statt.

The History of Health Care in Africa: Actors, Experiences, and Perspectives in the 20th Century

HHSA | Health in Sub-Saharan Africa has always been experienced, debated and pursued in a specific historical context. At the same time the history of health and health care in a specific local setting cannot be separated from processes on a larger scale. Neither diseases nor ideas and practices about health, healing and care stopped at colonial or national borders. This conference looks beyond the borders of colonial empires and national states by bringing together researchers with different temporal and spatial perspectives on the history of health, health care and medical research in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Symposium 2011: Health – a Human Right

(E) MMS | Health is a human right: too often forgotten, this is the central issue of international health policy and health cooperation. And yet millions of people die each year in developing countries due to easily preventable diseases. This is a basic violation of the human right to health. In addition, women, minorities and marginalized people often have limited access to health care due to poorly functioning health care systems. That is why this year's Swiss Health Cooperation Symposium, which will be organized by the Swiss Red Cross and the Network Medicus Mundi Switzerland will reflect debate question how the human right to health could be strengthened in the Swiss Foreign Health Policy as well as in Global Health.

(D) Ivory Coast SRK | Drei Monate nach den blutigen Unruhen in der Elfenbeinküste leben noch viele als Flüchtlinge in den Nachbarländern und als Vertriebene im eigenen Land. Die TV-Kameras sind weg, doch das Rote Kreuz unterstützt die Menschen im Alltagsleben.

Research in a Warzone
CSRS and Swiss TPH featured in Nature
Ivory Coast Swss TPH | "Research in a Warzone", an article appearing today (June 30) in the weekly international and interdisciplinary journal of science, Nature, describes the experiences of the Swiss Centre for Scientific Research (CSRS) in Côte d'Ivoire over the last decade. While many international partners have pulled out of Côte d'Ivoire since the coup d'état in December 1999, CSRS, a longterm partner institution of Swiss TPH, maintained essential research and support activities throughout that time, including during the most recent crisis beginning in November 2010.

Palestine Kinderhilfe Bethlehem | Die Geburt eines Kindes ist mit viel Freude und Erwartungen, manchmal aber auch mit Unsicherheiten und Ängsten verbunden. Wenn bei einem Neugeborenen medizinische Komplikationen auftreten, gerät die junge Familie nicht selten in einen Ausnahmezustand, vor allem im Krisengebiet. Die Neonatologie des Caritas Baby Hospitals Bethlehem im Westjordanland stellt die medizinische Versorgung für Neugeborene im Krisengebiet sicher und steht den kleinen Patienten und ihren Familien zusätzlich betreuend zur Seite.
