Persönliche Betroffenheit stand am Anfang dieses kleinen und überschaubaren Direkthilfeprojektes. Seit 1991 engagiert sich der Verein „Partnerschaft Kinderspitäler Biel-Haiti“ personell und finanziell im Hôpital Albert Schweitzer HAS. Was bedeutet es, als kleiner Verein mit einer grossen, US-amerikanischen Organisation zusammenzuarbeiten?

Vom 6. – 12. September 1978 fand in Alma Ata die Internationale Konferenz zu Primary Health Care (PHC) statt. Die dort verabschiedete Erklärung propagierte einen umfassenden Ansatz, der Gesundheitsversorgung nicht nur medizinisch sondern in einem umfassenden Sinn der sozialen und kulturellen Entwicklung definierte. Aus diesem Anlass nimmt Medicus Mundi Schwiez Alma Ata als Ausgangspunkt um über die Entwicklung und Zukunft von Community Health zu debattieren.

Medicus Mundi Schweiz, das Netzwerk „Gesundheit für alle“, feiert dieses Jahr sein 35jähriges Bestehen. Das Netzwerk vereint 46 in der internationalen Gesundheitszusammenarbeit tätige Schweizer Organisationen. Sie sind überzeugt, dass ihre gemeinsame Arbeit die Qualität und die Wirkung der Gesundheitszusammenarbeit durch die Schweiz stärkt.

Mitgliederversammlung nimmt 47. Mitglied auf

Die Mitgliederversammlung von Medicus Mundi Schweiz hat am 29. Mai 2008 die Organisation AEMRN als 47. Mitglied im Netzwerk aufgenommen. Das Afro-European Medical and Research Network, AEMRN, bezweckt eine Verbesserung der medizinischen Versorgung in den Projektgebieten durch Aufbau medizinischer Infrastrukturen, Ausbildung einheimischer medizinischer Fach- und Hilfskräfte oder durch die Mithilfe bei der Beschaffung von sauberem Trinkwasser. Charles Senessie von AEMRN zur Motivation MMS beizutreten:

The SDC of the DFA is to be radically re-organised. This means that the SDC will be better prepared for future challenges and for the implementation of the new standardised development policy of the Federal Council. The re-organisation is also a response to demands by the public accounts committee and by parliament.

“As a side event to the 61st World Health Assembly, Medicus Mundi International organized a technical meeting on “Contracting experiences between non-governmental health facilities and the public health sector in sub-Saharan Africa”. In the meantime, the meeting’s documentation including some background documents and the main inputs (Delphine Boulenger, Jean Perrot, Yves Sossou) is published on the MMI website.”

„One of the most important elements for the reduction of child mortality and childhood diseases in developing countries is the implementation of the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), a strategy developed by WHO and UNICEF more than ten years ago. The Novartis Foundation, in collaboration with WHO and Sirius Technologies, has been developing the IMCI Computerized Adaptation and Training Tool (ICATT). The tool allows the adaptation of the IMCI guidelines and the design and implementation of flexible training approaches at the country level. ICATT can be used for distance learning or classroom training of health workers in both preservice and in-service settings. This flexibility allows more health workers to be trained in IMCI.“

The conference on "Philanthropy in Global Health - Governance and Effectiveness Criteria" organised organised by the Basel Institute on Governance in partnership with the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel on 10 and 1 April 2008 allowed participants to gain a better understanding of new paradigms of the world health situation, in particular with respect to developing countries, that are the result of the massive new influx of private funds into the health sector. While the new funds made available by private charitable organisations such as the Gates Foundation and other organisations is clearly most welcome to assist in solving some of the world’s most pressing health concerns, this development also brings up a number of new challenges.

In May 2008 Health Action International (HAI) and the World Health Organization (Department of Medicine Policy and Standards) published the 2nd edition of a manual to collect and analyse medicine prices (patient prices and government procurement prices) across sectors and regions in a country, as well as medicine availability, treatment affordability and all price components in the supply chain from manufacturer to patient (taxes, mark-ups etc.).The results of over 50 surveys are currently available on the database, along with survey reports and other information.
