30 years after Alma Ata: The future of Community Health

(E) MMS | The Declaration of Alma Ata was signed 30 years ago. It reaffirmed health as a basic human right. Health for all is only achievable if people throughout the world can get involved in its social, economic and political development. Community health projects are an important approach to doing so. Where does international health cooperation stand 30 years after Alma Ata? What is the future of community health? Who are the players who can help to achieve the right to health for everyone? Medicus Mundi Switzerland is hosting the seventh Swiss Health Cooperation Symposium in Basel on 11th November 2008.

Health System Strengthening: Role of incentives?

(E) STI | In the past year there has been a rapid increase in interest and application of cash transfers and other incentives intended to strengthen health systems in developing and transition countries. The Swiss Tropical Institute (STI) is organizing its 12th Symposium assembling researchers as well as policy and decision makers interested in international health to examine this experience.

L’émigration des personnels de santé: une pénurie mortelle ?

(F) MdM | Selon l'Organisation Internationale des Migrations, l'Afrique a déjà perdu un tiers de son personnel qualifié et chaque année 20'000 personnes continuent à quitter le continent. Dans le même temps, la demande de personnel de santé augmente dans les pays à hauts revenus, qui ne forment pas assez de main d’œuvre et dont les besoins en soins de santé s'accroissent de jour en jour. Cette inégalité des services de soins entre pays en voie de développement et pays développés posent en dilemme éthique la question du recrutement des ressources humaines dans des pays qui sont déjà frappés par un manque important de personnel médical.
Interpellée par cette question sur ces projets, Médecins du Monde souhaite contribuer à la réflexion et mettre chaque acteur face à ses responsabilités. En collaboration avec la Policlinique Médicale Universitaire, MdM organise une conférence qui aura lieu le jeudi 27 novembre au CHUV à Lausanne.

Call for return to primary health care approach

Représentants de 10 000 ONG réunis à Paris, interpellent l’Europe
(F) SUD | Dans le contexte de la Présidence française de l’Union européenne, Coordination SUD invite les représentants des plates-formes nationales d’ONG de près de 100 pays (Rwanda, Nigéria, Mali, Etats-Unis, Colombie, Bolivie, Inde, Japon, Australie, Pologne, Hongrie, Italie, Royaume-Uni...) à Paris, le jeudi 30 octobre, pour la conférence « Regards du monde sur l’Europe ». Engagés dans une dynamique mondiale de coopération entre plates-formes d’ONG, à l’instar des syndicats et des collectivités territoriales, les participants y présenteront leurs analyses et attentes sur le rôle de l’Europe dans le monde.

Isolation and Solitary Confinement of Palestinians Prisoners in Israeli Detention

(E) Israel , Palestine Physicians for Human Rights Israel | Tens of prisoners are held in isolation in Israeli prisons each year on grounds of state, prison or prisoners' security. Isolated prisoners are held alone in a separate cell or with another prisoner who also requires isolation. The report, written by Tal Assif and Sahar Francis, examines how isolation is used in Israeli prisons and prison conditions and healthcare for palestinian prisoners held in isolation; raises concern about voliations of human rights and medical ethics related to isolation, and proposes alternative courses pf action for attending the isolated prisoners.

West Africa: Weighing free health care for all
Guide will be launched in November
(E) IRIN | West African governments considering lifting health care fees for all will soon have a guide to manage the financial impact of the move. The guide, which the NGO Save the Children expects to launch in November, will show policymakers in developing countries how to estimate resource needs that may arise from abolishing fees.
