Der mexikanische Bundesstaat Guerrero ist durch eine Dynamik von Aufständen und Militarisierung geprägt. Seit dem Scheitern der Agrarreform in den 60er Jahren ist ein schmutziger Krieg im Gange: AktivistInnen werden entführt, gefoltert und zum Verschwinden gebracht. Seit Ende 2008 nimmt die Repression stark zu und fordert immer mehr Opfer. Eine medico international schweiz Veranstaltung mit Ricardo Loewe, Arzt und Aktivist des Kollektivs gegen Folter und Straflosigkeit; Elizabeth Silva Nogales, soziale Aktivistin und Schwester des politischen Gefangenen Jacobo Silva Nogales.

Conceptions of health and disease, and related beliefs, traditional practices and the use of medicinal plants are rooted in culture and have an impact on behaviour and how people cope with the epidemic. Responses to HIV and AIDS need to be culturally appropriate, gender and age responsive, grounded in human rights and involve people living with HIV at all stages. Based on experiences and knowledge of partner organisations and others, cultural sensitive approaches to prevention, treatment, care and support of partner organisations are explored.

"A group of civil society organizations is organizing a civil society health forum in Geneva on May 15-16, preceding the 62nd World Health Assembly (WHA). The forum "Equity, Justice and Health" will focus on issues related to Social Determinants of Health and Primary Health Care as ways of responding to global health inequities. The purpose of the forum is to bring together a diverse representation of civil society to discuss and adopt effective strategies for improving people's health globally using "the rigth to health" and "health equity" approaches. One of the objectives is to strenghten an advocacy platform for promoting these approaches and to agree on key action to be pursued by CSOs during the World Health Assembly.
The event which is actively supported by the MMI Network and co-organized by the Network member Cordaid will be attended by various Network representatives."

Der Historiker Marcel Dreier blickt im Rahmen seiner Forschungsarbeit zurück auf 83 Jahre Entwicklungszusammenarbeit bei SolidarMed, Niklaus Labhardt vergleicht traditionelle Heiler und westliche Ärzte und ihren Umgang mit Patient/innen und Thomas Gass spricht zum Thema: "Zu weit, zu spät: Was tragen Dorfgesundheitsarbeiter zur medizinischen Versorgung im ländlichen Afrika bei?".

Der Meeting Point widmet sich der Arbeit des Vereins Freunde Behindertenintegration Kamerun (FBK). Seit elf Jahren unterstützt dieser das orthopädische Zentrum Obala (OZO) in Kamerun.Der Verein steht vor verschiedenen Herausforderungen. Folgende Fragen diskutiert der Meeting Point:
• Wie kann die Nachhaltigkeit des Projektes gesichert werden, finanziell und personell?
• Wie kann ein Nachfolger gefunden werden für den Gründer und Präsidenten des kamerunischen Vereins JHAR, und was sind die notwendigen Qualifikationen?
• Wie kann der ehrenamtlich arbeitende Vorstand, der zugleich Projektberater, Finanzverantwortlicher und Fundraiser ist, das Projekt in Kamerun gut begleiten und die Qualität langfristig sichern?

The "Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne" (EPFL)offers cutting-edge research opportunities in its four institutes, i.e. the Brain Mind Institute, the Institute for Bioengineering, the Swiss Inst. for Exp. Cancer Research ISREC, and the Global Health Institute (http://sv.epfl.ch). The Summer Research Program will give to the participating student hands-on research experience on projects in one of the research labs and special seminars/activities every Friday afternoon.

"The situation in the conflict zone constitutes a medical emergency. Both sides of the conflict have shown complete disregard for international humanitarian law. The medical community, including the many Sinhalese and Tamil health professionals who work abroad, must denounce the wholly unacceptable actions of both sides of the conflict, who are committing atrocities against innocent civilians in their name. The international community should continue to put pressure on the government for a ceasefire to let more humanitarian agencies into the conflict zone and allow civilians to escape. The UN called a recent 2-day pause in government military operations “inadequate”."

Within the project for HIV/AIDS prevention in the Central African Region , 50 participants met for the second annual “Forum Régional des Jeunes en lutte contre le SIDA dans la Zone CEMAC” (FREJES) meeting in Yaounde, Cameroon between 1st and 3rd April 2009. The participants discussed how to move forward in the process of regionalising approaches regarding prevention and social marketing approaches in the field of HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health, reports the Swiss Centre for International Health.

Argentina will be the site of the "First World Fair of Municipalities and Health: Rights, Citizenship and Integrated Local Management for Development", that will be held from 18 to 21 August 2009 in the Coast Salguero Center, Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. Authorities and experts of the numerous countries will participate in the meeting organized by the Ministry of Health of Argentina, with the support of the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO).
