Die hiesige Gesundheitsversorgung ist aber auf eine Pandemie vorbereitet: Notfallpläne bestehen, Medikamente sind in ausreichender Menge eingelagert und in vielen Haushalten liegen Schutzmasken bereit. In den Entwicklungsländern aber, in welchen Menschen bereits an einfach zu behandelnden Krankheiten sterben, stehen die Gesundheitssysteme vor einer grossen Herausforderung. MMS Meeting Point: Professionelle Dienstleistung – ehrenamtliche Führung

• Wie kann die Nachhaltigkeit des Projektes gesichert werden, finanziell und personell?
• Wie kann ein Nachfolger gefunden werden für den Gründer und Präsidenten des kamerunischen Vereins JHAR, und was sind die notwendigen Qualifikationen?
• Wie kann der ehrenamtlich arbeitende Vorstand, der zugleich Projektberater, Finanzverantwortlicher und Fundraiser ist, das Projekt in Kamerun gut begleiten und die Qualität langfristig sichern?

The Summer Research Program will give to the participating student hands-on research experience on projects in one of the research labs and special seminars/activities every Friday afternoon.

Bundesrat torpediert Erhöhung der Entwicklungshilfe
Entscheid gegen den Auftrag des Parlaments
(D) alliance sud | "Der Bundesrat will nicht, dass das Parlament dieses Jahr verbindlich eine Erhöhung der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit auf 0,5 Prozent des Bruttonationaleinkommens beschliesst. Er hat heute entschieden, dem Parlament keine Zusatzbotschaft vorzulegen, sondern nur einen Bericht. Damit widersetzt er sich einem klaren Auftrag des Parlaments. Alliance Sud, die entwicklungspolitische Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Hilfswerke Swissaid, Fastenopfer, Brot für alle, Helvetas, Caritas und Heks, hat kein Verständnis für diese Verweigerungshaltung. Sie erwartet von National- und Ständerat, dass sie auf ihrer Forderung beharren."

(D) Palestine Kinderhilfe Bethlehem | Papst Benedikt XVI. hat mit seinem Besuch des Caritas Baby Hospitals die Arbeit der Kinderhilfe Bethlehem in einzigartiger Weise gewürdigt. Für den Papst war dieser Besuch ein sehr persönliches Anliegen. Beim Rundgang über die Stationen nahm er sich viel Zeit für die kleinen Kinder. «Die Kinder dieser Stadt werden heute ähnlich wie Jesus in eine Welt hineingeboren, die geprägt ist von Armut, Ungewissheit und Unrast», sagte Papst Benedikt in Bethlehem. «Es ist wunderbar zu sehen, dass hier die Armen und Schwächsten im Mittelpunkt stehen», so der Papst zu den Mitarbeitern und Gästen.

Up to nine million Egyptians have been exposed to hepatitis C, and tens of thousands will die each year unless they receive a liver transplant.About 30 percent of people infected with HCV spontaneously clear the virus from their system within six months, according to studies done in Egypt. The rest develop chronic hepatitis, which in about a quarter of cases leads to cirrhosis and liver failure in 20 to 30 years.

Health System Strengthening: Role of conditional incentives?

(E) MMS/SCIH | As one of the results of the 12th STI Symposium on 28th and 29th November 2008 focusing on the role of conditional incentives for health system strengthening, a reader of symposium presentation has now been published through a special issue of the Bulletin Medicus Mundi. During the STI Symposium and across the articles of this issue of the Bulletin there is a strong message of caution with regard to the value of Conditional Cash Transfers and Pay for Performance Schemes. A common theme was that more evaluation and research was necessary to fully understand the implications, benefits and risks of this intervention.

(D) MMS | Am 27. April fand der erste MMS Round Table statt. Das neue Diskussionsforum erlaubt es, relevante Themen der internationalen Gesundheitszusammenarbeit mit Engagierten aus den Mitgliedorganisationen sowie weiteren Fachleuten zu diskutieren. Mit der Diskussion über die Folgen der chronischen Krankheiten in Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern lancierte MMS das Thema bei seinen Mitgliedorganisationen.

Holding governments to account for children's wellbeing
(E) HRIA | "Are some countries making good progress in improving child well-being? Is it getting worse in other countries? Save the Children's new Child Development Index is the world's first and only tool to answer these questions. It combines each country's performance in three areas specific to children, to produce a score on a scale of 0 to 100. We have measured child well-being over 3 periods from 1990. Japan is in first place, scoring just 0.4. Niger in Africa is in 137th place, with the highest score, 58, in 2000-2006."

Challenges for transforming policy into practice
Women’s reproductive rights in the Amazon basin of Ecuador
(E) Ecuador HRIA | "Despite Ecuador's policy initiatives on reproductive and sexual rights, the challenge of implementation and oversight remains. This report looks at the gaps and challenges to sexual and reproductive health and rights identified using a modified version of the Health Rights of Women Assessment Instrument (HeRWAI) in Ecuador. The HeRWAI tool was modified to look at three stages namely:Evaluation of government obligations related to reproductive and sexual health; the reality of access and utilization of services; the inequities and implementation challenges between the two. The results of this study show that an accessibility gap is evident as the access to services varies between rural and urban women. The results illustrate that the current accountability mechanisms to realise the sexual and reproductive health and rights are inadequate, meaning that much still needs to be done to realise sexual and reproductive health and rights."
