"The 62nd session World Health Assembly agreed to a resolution on public health, innovation and intellectual property that, among other things, settled outstanding issues regarding the “stakeholders” for various parts of the Global Strategy and Plan of Action. With regard to the issue of a possible medical R&D treaty, the outcome of the negotiation was something of a split decision. On the one hand, the WHA agreed that the WHO would not be a stakeholder (...). On the other hand, it was also agreed that the proposal for an R&D treaty would legitimately be considered by the WHO Expert Working Group on R&D Financing (EWG)."

"The 2006 World Health Report “Working Together for Health” was dedicated to the health workforce. In the same year WHO launched the human resources decade. In 2009 the workforce issue has disappeared from the headlines and from the WHA agenda. The draft WHO code of practice on international recruitment of health personnel has been postponed to next year’s Assembly. Nevertheless, the issue remains high on the agenda of the MMI Network. Private not-for-profit organisations play a crucial role in health provision for the poor in many countries. The private not-for-profit sector has made significant contributions to reducing health personnel attrition rates with emphasis on improving retention of health workers deployed in often neglected rural areas. In a technical meeting organized as a side event to the 62nd WHA, MMI and Cordaid presented a number of these initiatives and discussed their implications for a national health workforce strategy."

The WHA welcomes "the world health report 2008,1 published on the thirtieth anniversary of the international conference of Alma-Ata, that identifies four broad policy directions for reducing health inequalities and improving health for all: tackling health inequalities through universal coverage, putting people at the centre of care, integrating health into broader public policy, and providing inclusive leadership for health.

On occasion of the establishment of GLOBAL HEALTH EUROPE: A Platform for European Engagement in Global Health the Global Health Programme at the Graduate Institute, Geneva is hosting a high level symposium to explore the emerging regional dimension of global public health. Not only does the growing number of regional agreements in other sectors such as trade impact on population health, health itself is increasingly part of the deliberations of regional bodies such as the EU, ASEAN, AU and OAS. Particularly since the SARS and avian flu outbreaks regional bodies have included health in the functional areas of their cooperation and have explored how to jointly approach regional and global health threats.

Während zwei Wochen wandern sechs Spitzensportler der Vereinigung Médi-info 600 Kilometer über die Alpen von St-Gingolf (VS) nach Menton in Frankreich mit einem Höhenunterschied von 32'000 Metern.

Im Jahr 2010 ist dank der Fussball-WM in Südafrika für einmal der Blick der ganzen Welt auf die sonst oft vergessenen Projektregionen von SolidarMed gerichtet. Der Schweizer Nationalspieler Stephan Lichtsteiner hilft SolidarMed als Botschafter, die Brücke zwischen Fussball und der Gesundheit der Menschen im südlichen Afrika zu bauen. Um die Arbeit von SolidarMed kennenzulernen, nutzte Lichtsteiner die kurze Spielpause für eine Reise nach Mosambik. Dort machte er sich mit den eigenen Augen ein Bild davon, unter welchen Bedingungen die Menschen in der Region leben. Für Lichtsteiner ist die Partnerschaft mit SolidarMed Herzenssache: «Wenn ich meinen Teil für eine bessere Gesundheit der Menschen im südlichen Afrika beisteuern kann, helfe ich gerne. Als Sportler ist mir sehr bewusst, wie wertvoll die Gesundheit für einen Menschen ist.»

Die mit der «Hotel Bildungszentrum 21 AG» konsolidierte Jahresrechnung von mission 21, evangelisches missionswerk basel, weist ein positives Ergebnis von 1,4 Mio. Franken aus. Pfarrerin Bettina Krause, 56, aus Adliswil, Kanton Zürich, wurde anlässlich der Abgeordnetenversammlung von mission 21 einstimmig zur neuen Vorstandspräsidentin gewählt. Beim Podium zum Thema Werben für Kirche und Mission stand Pfarrer Martin Breitenfeldt, Direktor von mission 21 begeistert ein für den «Mut zum eigenen Glauben zu stehen». Das Podiumsgespräch war einer der Höhepunkte des Missionsfestes 2009.
