Death rates caused by infectious diseases have been overtaken by chronic diseases in all parts of the world except southern Africa. Chronic diseases can no longer be regarded as a problem that is exclusive to the developed world. This presents major challenges not only for the affected countries, but also for international health policy and non-governmental organizations involved in health cooperation. The eighth Swiss Health Cooperation Symposium to be organized by Medicus Mundi Switzerland will take place within the established framework.

On occasion of the establishment of GLOBAL HEALTH EUROPE: A Platform for European Engagement in Global Health the Global Health Programme at the Graduate Institute, Geneva is hosting a high level symposium to explore the emerging regional dimension of global public health. Not only does the growing number of regional agreements in other sectors such as trade impact on population health, health itself is increasingly part of the deliberations of regional bodies such as the EU, ASEAN, AU and OAS. Particularly since the SARS and avian flu outbreaks regional bodies have included health in the functional areas of their cooperation and have explored how to jointly approach regional and global health threats.

The subject of this year's Novartis Foundation Symposium is: "Tackle the crisis with a new world economic ethic?" Speakers will include Hans Küng, theologian and publicist, President of Foundation „Weltethos“; and Ioanna Kuçuradi, Turkish human rights activist and philosopher. The current economic, social and ecological crisis serves as a background for this topic. At the symposium, a new declaration on “Global Economic Ethic – Consequences for Global Businesses” will be presented. Speakers will debate this and other proposals of alternative ways out of the crisis critically. Not only the economic crisis, but also the social dimension, in particular extreme poverty, will prominently figure in the day’s discourse.

Konfliktbearbeitung und Mediation erhalten eine immer wichtigere Bedeutung gerade auch in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit. Diese Weiterbildung leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag an die Entwicklung und Förderung entsprechender Kompetenzen. Das Verfahren der integrativen Konfliktbearbeitung verbindet systemische, kulturhermeneutische, gruppenanalytische, gestaltpädagogische und weitere Ansätze. Es legt die Grundlage für die Transformation der Verhaltensweisen und Strategien sowie von Haltungen und Annahmen. Der Lehrgang befähigt die Teilnehmenden komplexe Konfliktkonstellationen und deren soziale, kulturelle und nicht bewusste Dimensionen zu analysieren sowie Optionen für eine kreative und konstruktive Bearbeitung von Konflikten zu entwickeln.

Nach siebenjähriger Aufbauarbeit be TearFund übernimmt Gerhard Bärtschi Mitte Oktober die Leitung der Abteilung Internationale Beziehungen. Der ausgebildete Master in Rural Social Development sowie diplomierte NPO-Manager verfügt über langjährige und ausgewiesene Erfahrungen in der Mission und der Entwicklungs-zusammenarbeit. Zusammen mit seinen 14 Mitarbeitenden in Basel und den 36 ökumenischen Mitarbeitenden in den Partnerländern ist Gerhard Bärtschi für die Beziehungen zu den 57 Partnerkirchen und -organisationen in 17 Ländern verantwortlich und betreut über 100 Projekte in der Entwicklungs-zusammenarbeit, in der Armutsbekämpfung und in der Theologie weltweit.

About 1.8 million people - mainly children under 5 years old - die every year from diarrhoeal diseases, mainly because of limited access to safe drinking water and poor sanitation. A promising solution is solar water disinfection (SODIS) a low-cost, point-of-use water purification method. Daniel Mäusezahl of the MMS member organisation Swiss Tropical Institute and colleagues conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial in 22 rural communities in Bolivia to evaluate the effect of SODIS.
