In her statement to the WHO Executive Board, the MMI representative Anke Tijtsma (Wemos, The Netherlands) welcomed the improvements made in this revised version of the Code: The amendments made have strengthened this vital document. The MMI Network especially welcomed the emphasis on the roles and responsibilities of destination countries in tackling the HRH crisis.

(D) Switzerland Tages-Anzeiger | Die von Medicus Mundi Schweiz im Bulletin, an einem Round Table und in der Sozialen Medizin geführte Debatte über die Notwendigkeit des von der WHO vorbereiteten Kodex bei der Rekrutierung von Gesundheitspersonal, hallt im Tages-Anzeiger (TA) nach. Bei der offiziellen Schweiz stösst der Kodex auf Skepsis, wie der TA schreibt. Insbesondere das Konzept der Selbstversorgung sei, so Gaudenz Silberschmidt vom Bundesamt für Gesundheit, "in einer globalen Welt der falsche Ansatz". Für den Verband des Pflegepersonals und Nichtregierungsorganisationen wie Medicus Mundi "grenzt die heutige Schweizer Rekrutierungspolitik an Diebstahl, weil sie letztlich den Pflegenotstand in ärmeren Ländern verschärfe."

Zu diesem Schluss kommt ein Bericht, der von der Schweizerischen Gesundheitsdirektorenkonferenz (GDK) und der Branchenorganisation der Berufsbildung im Gesundheitswesen, OdASanté, in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Der Anteil an Personal mit ausländischer Nationalität beträgt in den Spitälern denn auch rund einen Drittel. Der Personalbedarf kann längerfristig nur gesichert werden, wenn alle verantwortlichen Akteure die Ausbildungstätigkeit weiter fördern und die Massnahmen zur Personalerhaltung rasch einleiten."

HWAI writes: "The Code is necessary to (1) respond to the critical HRH shortages and (2) ensure the full realization of the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health – “the right to health” – in all contexts."

The Conference will be held in Zagreb on the 25th and the 26th March 2010. As every year, current topics of interest to the many local and international stakeholders in the region are addressed. The 2010 Conference has the theme “A decade of responding to HIV in the Western Balkans region: What have we learned and where are we going?” Participants from vulnerable groups, national and international NGOs, government agencies, and UN and international agencies are expected to participate. New brand: STI becomes Swiss TPH

(E) Switzerland STPH | In June 2009 the Institute for Social and Preventive Medicine of the University of Basel, internationally recognized in the areas of environmental epidemiology and women’s health, was integrated into the STI. With the beginning of the year 2010, the physical integration of our offices take place, and the whole Institute publicly take on its new name, the “Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute”, also to be known as the “Swiss TPH”.

medico international: Änderungen auf der Geschäftsstelle
(D) medico international schweiz | medico international schweiz hat mit Barbara Schumacher eine neue Projektverantwortliche. Bei diversen ehrenamtlichen Einsätzen im In- und Ausland engagierte sie sich für MigrantInnen und in der Friedensarbeit. Nach einem Aufenthalt in Genf arbeitete sie als Freiwillige in lokalen Projekten in Kroatien und Israel/Palästina mit. Danach studierte sie an der Universität Zürich Ethnologie und arbeitete gleichzeitig in einer Non-Profit-Organisation als Buchhalterin. Barbara Schumacher wird bei medico die Projektkoordination übernehmen und für die Finanzen verantwortlich sein. Nach dreijähriger engagierter Arbeit in Zürich verliess Philipp Gerber die Geschäftsstelle per Ende 2009, um neu in der Solidarität mit den Basisbewegungen in Mexiko zu arbeiten.
