aidsfocus.ch | The global economic crisis that has induced cutbacks in the spending of Government and international donors also threatens efforts for an effective response to HIV and AIDS. On the other hand, HIV and AIDS with a present high of 33.4 million people living with HIV remains a serious global problem, reaching out beyond the health sector – and a united concerted effort is needed more than ever. What are the implications of these changes and debates on macro level for Swiss NGOs working in the field of HIV, AIDS and international cooperation? What are the implications for prevention, for treatment programmes and/or on programmes for psychosocial support? How can the demand for universal access to comprehensive prevention, treatment, care and support by 2015 still be met?

South Africa Afrika-Komitee | Im Vorfeld der Fussball-WM in Südafrika zeigt die vom Afrika-Komitee mitgetragene KEESA (Kampagne für Entschuldung und Entschädigung im südlichen Afrika)den aktuellen Dokumentarfilm "When the Mountain Meets its Shadow", der anhand von vier ProtagonistInnen ungelöste Probleme aus der Apartheidszeit anschaulich darstellt. An der Vorführung in Basel werden die FilmemacherInnen Alexander Kleider und Daniela Michel sowie die Protagonisten Ashraf Cassiem und Mncedisi Twalo aus Kapstadt anwesend sein. Der Film wird aber auch an verschiedenen weiteren Orten in der Schweiz gezeigt.

Geneva Health Forum 2010: Towards Global Acces to Health

HUG | A joint initiative launched by the Geneva University Hospitals and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva in partnership with the main international organizations active in health in Geneva and around the world, the Geneva Health Forum and the Global Access to Health Platform bring together the major stakeholders in global access to health – from field workers to policy-makers. The Forum and the Platform together form a developing global network for international and inter-sectoral dialogue, which has the vision of facilitating the strengthening of health systems and basic health services, striving to keep global access to health on the international agenda.

Médecins Sans Frontières | Die Veränderungen der Konflikte weltweit wirken sich auf die Lebensbedingungen der betroffenen Bevölkerung aus und stellen die humanitäre Hilfe vor schwierige Herausforderungen. Die Konferenz beleuchtet die Rolle der humanitären Akteure, Entwicklungsorganisationen und Regierungen und stellt die Frage, ob und wie humanitäre Hilfe unabhängig von politischen und anderen Interessen handeln kann. Diskutieren wollen wir mit Vertretern der Regierung (DEZA, Toni Frisch) und anderen Akteuren wie Swisspeace (Anita Müller), dem IKRK und Alliance Sud (Peter Niggli). Um Anmeldung bis zum 19. Executive Course on Global Health Diplomacy

IHEID | The Global Health Programme at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva has launched its application period for its annual executive course on global health diplomacy. Diplomacy is undergoing profound changes in the 21st century - and global health is one of the areas where this is most apparent. The summer course will focus on health diplomacy as it relates to health issues that transcend national boundaries and are global in nature, discuss the challenges before it, and how they are being addressed by different groups and at different levels of governance. mission 21 unterstützt Erdbebenopfer in Chile
Langfristige Aufbauhilfe
Chile mission 21 | Die Küstengegend um die Stadt Concepción ist vom jüngsten Erdbeben in Chile am stärksten betroffen. Nach bangen Tagen herrscht nun Gewissheit: Die dort tätigen Mitarbeitenden von mission 21 sind am Leben. Doch auch die Naturkatastrophe in Chile zeigt leider: Die Ärmsten haben am meisten unter den Folgen zu leiden. mission 21 ist nicht auf sofortige Nothilfe, sondern auf Aufbauhilfe spezialisiert. Die chilenischen Partner von mission 21 sind in Sozialprojekten mitten unter den Schwerstbetroffenen in der Hauptstadt Santiago und in Concepción tätig. Jahrelange Aufbauhilfe in der Gegend um Concepción wird dringend nötig sein. mission 21 hat ein Spendenkonto „Wiederaufbau Chile“ eingerichtet.

Rund eine halbe Million zerstörter Wohnhäuser
(D) Chile SRK | Seit dem Erdbeben vom 27. Februar in Chile beteiligen sich Hunderte von Rotkreuz-Freiwilligen an der Rettung von Überlebenden. Das Schweizerische Rote Kreuz (SRK) beteiligt sich mit 100‘000 Franken an der Nothilfe.

Tanzania Swiss TPH | The Tanzanian government in cooperation with the Tanzania Commission of AIDS (TACAIDS) is in the final stages of drafting an HIV Prevention Strategy for the Tanzania Mainland. This process was supported by the SCIH (Swiss Centre for International Health/Swiss TPH) Senior Education Advisor Heinrich Heinrichs. The HIV Prevention Strategy for Tanzania Mainland is based on a thorough review of HIV epidemiology in Tanzania (magnitude, trends and drivers) and the current HIV prevention response. The aim is to guide comprehensive multi-sectoral HIV prevention efforts with a major emphasis on full scale proven and prioritised HIV prevention interventions that address the drivers of the epidemic, while ensuring that appropriate HIV prevention efforts are pursued in disproportionately affected population groups.

Humanité – das neue Magazin des Schweizerischen Roten Kreuzes
Gesundheitsförderung in der internationalen Zusammenarbeit
(D) SRK | Humanité – Menschlichkeit – ist der oberste Grundsatz des Roten Kreuzes. Wo Menschlichkeit gelebt wird, erzählt Humanité, das neue Magazin des SRK. Am 15. Februar 2010 erschien die erste Ausgabe der Publikation, die das SRK künftig viermal pro Jahr in an seine Gönnerinnen und Gönner verschickt. Die Gesundheitsförderung in der Internationalen Zusammenarbeit ist Schwerpunktthema der ersten Ausgabe. Der Aufbau einer elementaren Gesundheitsversorgung in Sudan und ein Porträt der Leiterin des Aids-Programms des SRK in Swasiland illustrieren das Thema.

PAHO-Auszeichnung für Enfants du Monde
Gesundheitsprogramm für junge Frauen, Mütter und Kleinkinder in El Salvador
(D) El Salvador EdM | Die Panamerikanische Gesundheitsorganisation hat das Gesundheitsprogramm für Mutter und Kind von Enfants du Monde als eines der drei besten Programme in Lateinamerika ausgezeichnet. Die Programmpartner, das salvadorianische Gesundheitsministerium und die lokale Organisation Concertación Educativa de El Salvador, haben einen Preis in Höhe von 5000 Dollar erhalten. Er zeichnet die Massnahmen dieses Gesundheitsprogramm für junge Frauen, Mütter und Kleinkinder aus (IFC-Ansatz). Seit drei Jahren verbessern Enfants du Monde und ihre Partner die Gesundheitsdienste und bieten Gesundheitsateliers für schwangere Frauen, ihre Familien und Dorfgemeinschaften an. 16 besonders benachteiligte Gemeinden profitieren davon.

(E) SDC | A clear majority of the Swiss population views development assistance as an effective strategy in combating world-wide poverty and tackling development problems. Urgent action is deemed necessary in the areas of enhancing fair trade and addressing global issues. These were the results of a representative population survey commissioned by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and the Swiss Alliance of Development Organizations (Alliance Sud).

The Global Fund's 2010 results report
Global Fund | Virtual elimination of mother to child HIV transmission by 2015 is now within reach if current rates of progress by Global Fund-supported programs and other efforts are maintained. Malaria may be eliminated as a public health problem within a decade in most countries where it is endemic. Tuberculosis prevalence in many countries is declining and the international target of halving TB prevalence could be met by 2015.

New Dichotomy in Health Systems Strengthening?
What Can We Learn from Ethiopia?
Ethiopia WFPHA | The Journal of Public Health Policy publishes a report of the first working group of the High-Level Taskforce on Innovative International Financing for Health Systems (Taskforce). It "reveals two different approaches to health systems strengthening (HSS) in low-income countries (LICs). One approach, developed by the WHO, is a plan for more health centres, staffed with ‘classic’ health workers: physicians, nurses and midwives. The other approach, has been developed by the World Bank, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. The ‘Marginal Budgeting for Bottlenecks (MBB) approach’, as it is called, requires more health posts and health workers with more basic training."

MMI | ”The Call for Ethical Clinical Trials in Developing Countries has been formulated out of concern about the shift in many clinical drug trials away from the richer nations and towards developing countries, and the associated ethical violations. It represents a call to action for policy makers, regulators and pharmaceutical companies to protect vulnerable trial subjects. The call was drafted by a worldwide coalition of health and human rights organizations and experts led by the Wemos Foundation. One year after the launch of the FairDrugs.org campaign, in February 2009, the number of supporters of the ‘Call for Ethical Clinical Trials in Developing Countries’ is nearly 170, including leading figures in the field of medicines and ethics. They lend enormous weight to the campaign and motivate politicians, policymakers and pharmaceutical companies to pay attention to ethics.”

Unsere Gesundheit geht auf Kosten der Armen

BaZ | Die Basler Zeitung publizierte am 26. Februar 2010 einen Hintergrundartikel zur Rekrutierung von Gesundheitspersonal in einkommenschwachen Ländern: "In westlichen Ländern werden die Menschen immer älter. Das stellt auch deren Gesundheitssysteme vor Herausforderungen. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation will Regeln für die Rekrutierung von Fachpersonal erstellen. Doch die Schweiz tut sich schwer damit," kritisieren NGOs wie das Netzwerk Medicus Mundi Schweiz.
