La lutte contre la malnutrition et la sous-alimentation: facteur clé de la santé

«Mes enfants doivent grandir – mais ça n’est pas le cas», se désolait dernièrement auprès de l’IRIN – une agence des Nations-Unies – une maman zimbabwéenne élevant seule ses trois enfants à Harare. La malnutrition chronique est très répandue au Zimbabwe: selon l’UNICEF, un enfant sur trois en souffre et 12'000 en meurent chaque année dans ce pays.

Le Zimbabwe n’est qu’un pays parmi tant d’autres où sévissent la malnutrition et la sous-alimentation. L’UNICEF estime qu’environ un tiers des enfants de moins de cinq ans dans les pays en développement accusent un retard de développement physique et intellectuel en raison d’une malnutrition chronique. Ces enfants risquent de décéder prématurément, leur organisme parvenant moins bien à se défendre face aux maladies infectieuses, même les plus bénignes. Leur avenir économique est compromis également, car leurs performances scolai-res sont souvent insuffisantes.

L’alimentation est l’un des facteurs clés de réalisation du droit à la santé. Dès lors, intégrer ce facteur dans la coopération en matière de santé représente une approche importante pour améliorer la situation sanitaire dans les pays en développement. Les organisations membres du Réseau Medicus Mundi Suisse travaillent principalement sur deux axes pour améliorer l’état nutritionnel des populations dont elles s’occupent: elles fournissent des ali-ments spéciaux aux personnes malnutries et elles mènent des campagnes d’information.

Au Kirghizistan, la Croix-Rouge suisse mise depuis quelques années sur l’administration de poudre Sprinkles comme complément alimentaire pour les enfants, et ce avec succès. En Guinée, la Fondation terre des hommes a pratiqué et évalué l’emploi du RUTF (Ready to Use Therapeutic Food). A la lumière de cette expérience, elle s’interroge sur le bien-fondé de la fourniture irréfléchie de RUTF – telle que prônée par l’OMS notamment.

Se pose en outre la question de savoir comment intégrer dans les systèmes de santé des pays en développement la thématique de l’alimentation et le nécessaire travail de sensibilisa-tion à ce sujet. L’exemple de la Bolivie pourrait être éclairant à cet égard: le gouvernement a lancé un programme «malnutrition zéro». A travers des campagnes d’information dans les villes, plusieurs ONG s’efforcent de combattre la malnutrition qui y sévit.

Loin d’être un sujet bateau de la coopération au développement, l’alimentation touche au cœur de notre postulat: la santé pour tous. Le 9 novembre, le 9e Symposium du Réseau MMS s’y intéressera de près.

MMS Symposium 2010: Kampf gegen Mangel- und Unterernährung

(D) MMS | Gesundheit, Ernährung und Entwicklung sind aufs Engste miteinander verknüpft. Unter den Kindern, die unter 5 Jahre alt sind, sind in den Entwicklungsländern ein Drittel von ihrer Entwicklung her zurück geblieben. Grund dafür ist eine chronische Mangelernährung. Diese Kinder drohen früher zu sterben, da sie mit einfachen Infektionskrankheiten weniger gut zu recht kommen. Sie haben aber auch schlechtere wirtschaftliche Perspektiven, da ihre Schulleistungen oft mangelhaft bleiben. Das 9. Symposium des Netzwerks Medicus Mundi Schweiz diskutiert Erfahrungen und erfolgreicher Strategien, um nährstoffreiche Ernährung als Teil einer umfassenden Gesundheitsversorgung sicherzustellen.

The IPAC supports and advises the WHO Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals with the review and/or formulation of immunization practices, operational standards, tools and technologies to strengthen and improve the delivery of immunization programmes at country level to realise the Global Immunization Vision and Strategies goals. The following issues were addressed at the first biannual meeting: (1) introduction of new vaccine visual cue to indicate the time span a vaccine vial has to be discarded once opened, in the context of the multi-dose vaccine policy; (2) standardisation of the WHO vaccines pre-qualification process; (3) operational aspects of introducing Hepatitis B vaccine at birth; (4) terminology and data implications of routine and supplemental vaccinations; (5) controlled temperature chain."
