| There are more effective, safe and good quality modern pharmaceuticals available today than ever before. However, it is paradoxical that consumers, particularly in the developed countries, are purchasing and using more and more herbal remedies. There is evidence that some of the herbal remedies in the market are not safe, effective and of good quality. This raises the issue of consumer safety.

Die Freihandels-Vereinbarung GATT und die Schaffung der Welthandelsorganisation WTO haben für die Versorgung der Dritten Welt mit Arzneimitteln weitreichende Konsequenzen. Erstmals werden die Länder gezwungen, Patente für Arzneimittel zu akzeptieren. "Kopf - Transnationale Firmen gewinnen, Zahl - Entwicklungsländer verlieren". Mit dieser moderne Variante eines Kinderspiels verdeutlicht Kumariah Balasubramaniam, Asien-Koordinator von Health Action International (HAI), seine Einschätzung, dass die neuen Welthandelsvereinbarungen so gestaltet sind, dass sie den grossen Firmen ein Maximum an Freiheit in ihren Entscheidungen und den nationalen Regierungen ein Minimum an Einfluss auf die Wirtschaft zugestehen.
