A Global Biomedical R&D Fund and Mechanism for Innovations of Public Health Importance

Experts demand for a new funding model for the development of drugs and vaccines for diseases of poverty

The Ebola crisis in West Africa showed the inability of the Western world to respond rapidly to epidemics and health crises. In the journal PLoS Medicine renowned health experts plead for a new global funding model to accelerate the development of new drugs against poverty diseases.

Market-driven research and development in the search for measures against the major global health challenges largely failed. Renowned global health experts including Prof. Marcel Tanner from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) expressed their concerns in an article which was recently published in the journal PLoS Medicine. They demand for novel health solutions and for a new funding model for the development of new drugs.
