MMS Nachrichten vom 04.06.2013

We must be the generation that breaks down the walls of poverty’s prison, and in their place builds health, dignity and prosperity for all people."

Executive Course on Global Health Diplomacy

Geneva, 1-5 July 2013

"Diplomacy is undergoing profound changes in the 21st century – and global health is one of the areas where this is most apparent. The negotiation processes that shape and manage the global policy environment for health are increasingly conducted not only between public health experts representing health ministries of nation states but include many other major players at the national level and in the global arena. These include philanthropists and public-private players. (...) The course focuses on health diplomacy as it relates to health issues that transcend national boundaries as well as how they are being addressed by different groups and at different levels of governance."

WHO, the World Bank and Universal Health Coverage

"Jim Kim has finally revealed his hand on the Bank’s future approach to health"

"At the annual meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, which closed on 27 May, the World Bank president, Jim Kim, made an impassioned speech. (...) First, he endorsed wholeheartedly the spirit of the Alma-Ata declaration – a highly symbolic act in the context of the WHO-Bank relationship. Second, he committed the Bank to pursuing UHC. He praised Thailand’s adoption of UHC policies, noting that they had been introduced in spite of fiscal concerns raised by the Bank. Third, he unequivocally condemned user fee policies as 'unjust and unnecessary'. These are all powerful messages – directed at his own staff as much as at WHO. He concluded with a plea to reduce the fragmentation of global health funders which was ‘literally killing people’," writes Charles Clift in a comment for Chatham House.

WHO Global Code of Practice: Weak information sharing, transparency and accountability

Statement by Medicus Mundi International to the 66th session of the World Health Assembly

"The implementation of the Code and necessary monitoring involved demands commitment, leadership and a spirit of ownership for the Code at all levels. The spirit needs to be further developed, as the Code is one of only few regulatory instruments developed and adopted by WHO over the last years. The success or failure of its implementation will be seen as a case study for the capacity of WHO and its members in the field of global standard setting and regulation. This links the technical issue of Code implementation with the overall issue of WHO reform and the role of WHO in global health governance."

Poverty, Health and the Human Future

World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim’s Speech at the World Health Assembly

"Alma-Ata showed the importance of primary health care as a model of health action rooted in the community; responsive to the community’s needs; and attuned to its economic, social and cultural aspirations. Alma-Ata set the bar high. But we continue to struggle to provide effective, high-value primary health care to all our citizens. Unfortunately, none of WHO’s 194 Member States has yet built the perfect health care system. We can all get better and we know it. But in the grand spirit of Alma-Ata, we must focus again on the link between health and shared prosperity. And, this time, we must turn our loftiest aspirations into systems that build healthier, more productive, more equitable societies," said Jim Yong Kim in a noteworthy speech at this year's World Health Assembly.

Das Leiden um Geburtsfisteln muss beendet werden

Zum Internationalen Tag zur Beendigung von Geburtsfisteln am 23. Mai 2013

(pdf)
