MMS Nachrichten vom 08.05.2012

A Global Health expert at head of the World Bank

A comment by Eduardo Missoni

"That the US President's candidate to the Presidency of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, was the one selected for the job on April 16th 2012 by the Board of Directors of the global economic institution is no news. The novelty is that President Obama proposed a Global Health expert, medical doctor and anthropologist, not an economist."

Global Report for Research on Infectious Diseases of Poverty

TDR Report

"Each year infectious diseases kill 3.5 million people – mostly the poor and young children who live in low and middle income countries. Research can change this and bring health to many more people. TDR has brought people and institutions together to identify and advocate for the research priorities that will bring new and innovative approaches and products. The result is Global Report for Research on Infectious Diseases of Poverty , which provides a new cross-disciplinary approach and analysis. It is essential reading for policy-makers, funders and research leaders."

Swiss Public Health Conference: (Re-)Organizing Health Systems

Lausanne, 30. - 31. August 2012

Health District Management: Priority Setting and Resource Allocation

Basel, 2 - 13 July 2012

This two-weeks module is a simulation exercise applying the latest tools for assessing population health needs, establishing district intervention priorities, and allocating district health resources in a context of limited funding. In small groups participants take the roles of district health planning team members and will elaborate a full District Health Plan and Budget that responds to population needs, health system realities and resources, and contemporary evidence on effectiveness of interventions. During the learning process, students will apply practical computer-based tools and health information analyses to understand current coverage/access constraints retarding equity-effectiveness of a district health system. In addition they will set evidence-based priorities for intervention strategies, and allocate appropriate shares of resources to address population health need.
