MMS Nachrichten vom 08.05.2018

Air pollution inequality widens between rich and poor nations

"Rich cities have improved, but pollution in poorer countries is still rising and kills 7 million people a year globally, WHO data reveals. Pollution inequality between the world’s rich and poor is widening, according to the latest global data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) which shows that 7 million people – mostly in developing nations – die every year from airborne contaminants. Overall, nine in 10 people on the planet live with poor, even dangerous, air, says the WHO report, which is considered the most comprehensive collection of global air quality data. But levels of contamination vary widely depending on government actions and financial resources." (Photo: Anyang, China, severe air pollution/V.T. Polywoda/flickr, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

(Photo: HIV/AIDS Patient in Mozambique/United Nations Photo/flickr, CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

A new era for community health in countries of low and middle income?

"It is predicted that by 2030 there will be a worldwide shortage of over 14 million health workers. To help to address this pressing problem, the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos, Switzerland, saw the launch of a new 4-year US$100 million fund to support two non-governmental organisations, Last Mile Health and Living Goods, to train 50 000 community health workers (CHWs) in six countries. (...) The project has two core components. The first is the use of mobile technologies for training, decision support, and data collection (known as mHealth). The partnership will continue to use Living Goods' SmartHealth App and a “new digital education solution” from Digital Campus, working in collaboration with Last Mile Health."

#AidToo: Sexual exploitation in international cooperation. Prevent, respond adequately – and most of all: address the root causes
26. Mai 2018 – Graduate Institute, Maison de la Paix, Chemin Eugène-Rigot 2, Geneva

Geneva, 26 May 2018, 12.30-14.30 hrs.

#AidToo: Sexual exploitation in international cooperation. Prevent, respond adequately – and most of all: address the root causes

Medicus Mundi International (MMI) After the scandals of sexual abuse and exploitation by staff of “relief organizations” reported and discussed in early 2018, assessments and answers about how to deal with such misbehaviour by staff of organizations working in humanitarian aid and development cooperation need to be found at all levels: By the individual, by the institution (what values, norms, and regulations can they refer to in order to prevent such cases and, if they occur, to deal with them in an adequate way?), and by the sector and society as a whole. The workshop on 26 May will provide a space for asking critical questions and sharing assessments on what is to be done to prevent and properly respond to particular cases of sexual exploitation and misconduct. But the dialogue is intended to go beyond this: What is to be done to address the root causes? Please register your participation in advance, using the form available on the website of the Graduate Institute. Thank you!

Negotiating Health in an Interdependent World - 18-22 June 2018

Global Health Diplomacy

Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies Diplomacy is undergoing profound changes in the 21st century – and global health is one of the areas where this is most apparent. The negotiation processes that shape and manage the global policy environment for health are increasingly conducted not only between public health experts representing health ministries of nation states but include many other major players at the national level and in the global arena. (...) As health moves beyond the purely technical to become an ever more critical element in foreign policy, security policy and trade agreements, new skills are needed to negotiate global regimes, international agreements and treaties, and to maintain relations with a wide range of actors. The Fifth Global Symposium on Health Systems Research
08. Oktober 2018 – Health Systems Global, Liverpool, UK

Advancing Health Systems for All in the SDG Era

The Fifth Global Symposium on Health Systems Research

Health Systems Global The Alma Ata vision of ‘Health for All’ remains as compelling today as it was in 1978, as reflected in goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But the world has changed in forty years. Despite improved health outcomes, there remain extraordinary challenges for health equity and social inclusion, such as demographic and disease transitions, conflicts and their subsequent migrations, pluralistic health systems and markets, and climate change. Political systems still marginalize those most in need. Yet there are new opportunities for health systems to achieve universal coverage. The Fifth Global Symposium will advance conversations and collaborations on new ways of financing health; delivering services; and engaging the health workforce, new social and political alliances, and new applications of technologies to promote health for all.

13 Mio. Menschen in Syrien brauchen humanitäre Hilfe

Medienmitteilung - Syrien-Geberkonferenz
