Three-quarters of Africa’s confirmed new mpox cases are in Sierra Leone, all concentrated in high-density areas in all districts, with 648 confirmed cases in the past week. Yet the country only has around 10,000 vaccine doses."

WHO outlines recommendations to protect infants against RSV – respiratory syncytial virus

World Health Organization "Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) published its first-ever position paper on immunization products to protect infants against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) – the leading cause of acute lower respiratory infections in children globally. Every year, RSV causes about 100 000 deaths and over 3.6 million hospitalizations in children under the age of 5 years worldwide. About half of these deaths occur in infants younger than 6 months of age. The vast majority (97%) of RSV deaths in infants occur in low- and middle-income countries where there is limited access to supportive medical care, such as oxygen or hydration"

Deepening Intersectionality in Governance and Human Rights Agenda

Quest for a multidimensional, intersectional approach that can contribute to overcoming the complex and interconnected challenges we face.

Globally democracy, human rights, and multilateralism have been under multi-pronged attacks, facing severe challenges and constraints. Many are contributing directly to removing or shattering the institutional and normative frameworks for global-regional cooperation the world has long taken for granted. After decades of globalization and integration, the world seems to be fragmenting again, epitomized best, perhaps, by the return of geopolitics, protectionism, unilateral sanctions, treaty withdrawals including withdrawals from global institutions, and even military and economic coercion. Challenged by the global-regional powers, the multilateral system is shaken both in its normative foundations and its operational capacity. Is the state of play for governance going through one of the most complex challenges and corresponding stress and changes? How would we ensure inclusion, intersectionality and the human rights agenda remain relevant for the greater humanity? Has the time come to rethink governance and human rights?

Inequities in the global nursing workforce leave many of the world’s population without access to essential health services, which could threaten progress towards universal health coverage (UHC), global health security and the health-related development goals. Rising Inequalities: Increasing Discrimination, Stigmatization & the Global Rollback on LGBTIQA+ and Gender Rights – Can AI and social media ease the situation?

Panel discussion with Léon Salin (Salin Association), Hafid Derbal (terres des hommes schweiz), Lea Maria Schäfer (Clare&me) & Angel Yakoub (Juso BL) facilitated by Martin Leschhorn, Director Medicus Mundi Switzerland

MMS Conference 2025 The panel brought together the day's debates and discussed them in a broader context. It discussed ways in which individuals, communities and society can be empowered to harness the potential of AI and social media to strengthen sexual rights. A particular focus was placed on schools (using the example of the Juso initiative for comprehensive sex education in the canton of Basel-Landschaft). Key questions: - How can individuals and communities be empowered to promote sexual rights in their use of AI and social media? - What role do schools and youth organisations play in this context, both in Switzerland and in the Global South? - What legal guidelines are needed and how can we translate these into political action?

Co-designed and safe: Digital SRHR platform for adolescents in resource-limited setting

Presentation by Dr. Laura Ruckstuhl (SolidarMed) at the MMS Conference 30 April 2025

MMS Conference 2025 The pilot of the digital HealthHub at a rural health facility demonstrates that a co-designed, adolescent-centered digital platform can effectively engage a rural adolescent population in accessing age-appropriate SRHR information in resource-limited settings. Although preliminary, the findings underscore the critical need for inclusive, youth-driven digital solutions and suggest that this approach offers a replicable model for advancing SRHR safely and equitably. Future efforts will focus on expanding the platform’s reach, integrating robust analytics to capture detailed usage patterns, and refining technical features to address challenges such as power instability, thereby enhancing overall system effectiveness.

Bridging the Digital Divide: Ethical AI Implementation for Global SRHR Equity

Presentation by Stephany Oliveros (SheAI) at the MMS Conference 30 April 2025

MMS Conference 2025 In this talk, Stephany Oliveros, CEO and co-founder of SheAI, examined the near future of AI through the lens of SRHR. Drawing from the latest developments in generative AI, agent-based systems, and ethical design, she weaved together global examples with urgent insights. What does it mean when an AI system trained on biased data starts giving health advice? Who owns your reproductive data when it’s collected through an app? And what happens when misinformation is delivered with algorithmic confidence? This talk was a call to action, not just to adopt AI, but to shape it with care. If we want a future where AI enhances SRHR instead of undermining it, we must build technologies that reflect diverse realities, protect autonomy, and restore trust. The decisions we make now will define whether AI becomes an ally in the fight for sexual and reproductive justice, or another system of control.

Global Health Watch 7 highlights the polycrisis – and possibilities – in global health

On World Health Day, PHM released a preview of Global Health Watch 7, providing analysis and alternatives for addressing the global health polycrisis

People's Health Dispatch "On World Health Day, April 7, health workers and activists across the globe mobilized in support of a more just and inclusive vision of health. This year’s actions – including local efforts to address social determinants of health, calls for democratized systems, and resistance to privatization – coincided with the release of a preview of the new edition of the People’s Health Movement’s (PHM) flagship publication, Global Health Watch 7. The preview features the opening chapter of the forthcoming volume, which is based on the contributions of more than 100 activists sharing both political insights and accounts of grassroots struggles. According to Chiara Bodini, co-editor of this edition with Ronald Labonté, the book also builds on the discussions and conclusions from last year’s 5th People’s Health Assembly in Mar del Plata, Argentina. As with previous editions, Global Health Watch 7 will offer a broad overview of the state of global health – examining political and economic foundations, environmental and social factors, developments in global health governance, and popular movements and struggles."

Geneva Health Files "(...) Far from perfect, this legal instrument tries to seek a balance between the interests of 193 member states of WHO (sans United States). Given the vast inequalities between countries, a balanced agreement however may not necessarily mean an equitable outcome. This should not be surprising, since the developed world boasts of the resources, the expertise, the industry, the institutions, and the narratives. Even so, the agreement that took three years to negotiate is emblematic of the leadership, the persistence, and the structural weaknesses of the developing world. This vast legal text with three chapters comprising 37 articles is at 32 pages. If adopted, pending negotiations and consensus on the annex on Pathogen Access and Benefits Sharing, it is expected to be the foundation of a structured framework for Pandemic Preparedness, Prevention and Response."
