International Network for Cooperation in Mental Health e.V./ CIH - Center for International Health As early as 1993, the World Development Report - Investing in Health (WHO/World Bank) estimated that neuropsychiatric disorders contributed 10.5% of the global burden of disease (DALYs) and suggested that this could rise to 15% in 2020. Despite this striking prediction, mental disorders are still neglected. The vast majority of people suffering from depression, dementia, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and substance abuse are living in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Most patients do not receive appropriate treatment - many are stigmatized with prejudice and social exclusion.
