Knowledge, attitude and practices of adolescents in rural primary schools in Malawi about Menstrual Hygiene Management

Menstrual Hygiene Management

Croix-Rouge suisse Menstruation, though a natural part of the reproductive cycle, it is often not talked about because of cultural taboos in many parts of Africa, and Malawi is not spared. How girls can manage menstruation safely and with dignity is an area that has not received a lot of attention by actors focusing on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), reproductive health and education. Poor menstrual hygiene management affects the general health and wellbeing of girls including poor attendance and performance in class. Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) among its many strategic areas of focus aims at influencing duty bearers and decision makers to act at all times in the interest of vulnerable populations, thus helping the vulnerable populations realize their rights and be able to demand for access to the same. MRCS therefore puts Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) high on its agenda to ensure girls’ right to MHM are realized and that there is a conducive environment for girls around issues to do with MHM.
